After your pet has a complete dental cleaning and polishing, it is now up to you to help keep these teeth clean.  Good home care requires more then feeding dry food.  Here are some helpful tips to accomplish the goal of maintaining and keeping healthy teeth!

It is important that you wait 1 week after the dental before any home care regimen begins!

As always, if you have any questions, please contact our office.

 Approved Chew Toys Minimize

Many of the treats listed below can be purchased at Mill Creek Animal Clinic.  If you do decide to go to another store, please look for the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal.  Remember, all chew toys are meant to be chewed and not swallowed whole.  Please supervise your pet with all toys.

Dental treats are designed to compliment your daily home dental care regimen.  The best way to control plaque is by brushing your pet’s teeth daily, treats should be used as a reward or when you can’t brush.

 Introducing Teeth Brushing Minimize

Get your pet accustomed to the process of teethbrushing.

1.  Start by rubbing the outside of your pet’s teeth with your finger.  After your pet becomes comfortable with that, let your pet taste the toothpaste.

2.  Try offering a small amount on your finger.  Please only use toothpaste made for pets, as they will     swallow the paste.  Our clinic has many flavors, so finding your pet’s favorite will be easy.

3. Gently rub the outside of the teeth and gums with a little toothpaste on your finger or a finger-    toothbrush in a circular motion.  Slide your finger or brush along the teeth back in the cheek pouch.    You don’t have to open their mouth to do this!

4. As your pet gets used to your finger, try slowly introducing the toothbrush.

5. Be sure to stop brushing before you pet begins to fuss.  We don’t want them to learn that fussing    makes you stop.

Don’t try too hard.  You just need to brush the outside surfaces.  Make sure you get the large teeth in the back, tartar build up fastest there.  It should only take about 30 seconds per side.
